My Story

Hey there! I’m Janelle Kee-Sue, a certified coach, hypnotherapist and accredited cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) practitioner based in Wellington, New Zealand. I’m so glad you’re here! Let me introduce myself.

I became a coach and hypnotherapist purely by accident. Unhappy with my own life—my negative mindset, relentless self-doubt, lack of confidence, crappy pay and a general sense of unfulfillment and unhappiness in my career and life, I searched for more, and found it while studying personal growth and development.

What I learned completely changed my life. With these tools and new ways of thinking I managed to stop the negative self-talk, adopt a positive mindset, become self-confident, happy and start living the life I wanted.

I became a world champion bikini bodybuilding athlete, travelled to 47 countries, started my own photography business, and my career blossomed: I doubled my salary within a few years because I finally realised my worth and learned how to communicate it, and was promoted into my dream job; a marketing manager and leader of a wonderful team of six.

All because I coached myself to change my thinking, get clear on what I really wanted, and learned how to cultivate the self-confidence and belief to make it happen. I learned how to get control of my social anxiety, I overcame my fear of public speaking, and mastered the art of communication (in a way that felt authentic to me).

I found my quiet confidence, and learned to back myself, tame the seemingly untamable anxiety, and trust myself.

Now I’m coaching others to do the same, and I’d love to help you too.

I thought being an introvert was a weakness

As an introvert, I’ve always been reserved and a deep thinker. People would call me shy or quiet (I hated that, by the way), and it made me quite anxious and depressed because I’d constantly overthink things and jump to the worst case scenario, causing me a lot of unnecessary stress.

I wished I was more extroverted because they seemed to get better opportunities in life and to exude confidence. For many of us, our idealised representation of confidence is extroversion. However, I’ve come to realise that’s totally untrue.

Being introverted and “quiet” doesn’t mean you’re unconfident or less of a human being. But that’s how the many of us see it. That’s what I thought when I was growing up, anyway. I felt like an outsider; like I was invisible and there was something wrong with me because of my introversion. â€‹

I remember when I was seven years old at school and a teacher was throwing out lollies to a big group of kids in the recreation area. All the louder kids that commanded her attention through yelling out and waving got lollies, while the quiet kids that waited patiently and didn’t speak up didn’t. Including me.

When I got home from school I cried my eyes out, because it felt so unfair. That was the first time I felt invisible. That was the first time I realised that the loud kids were more likely to get what they wanted, while the quiet kids were more likely to go home empty handed.

Why did I have to be loud and the centre of attention to be seen and heard? I didn’t want that. I didn’t know how to do that. It felt so icky and unnatural, and affected my self-confidence and self worth.

This carried into the workplace. I struggled to speak up for myself when my manager in my first job told me off for not getting my work done sooner, when her deadlines were completely unrealistic.

I failed to back myself, believe in myself and set professional boundaries, which led me to being walked over, underpaid, overworked and getting burnt out.

My dream job was to be a communications and marketing manager, but I didn’t think leadership was on the cards for me because I was an introvert with social anxiety and a fear of public speaking.

Everyone I saw in leadership positions were extroverts. Successful people all seemed to be extroverts. People whose opinions were listened to the most seemed to be the people who were super comfortable speaking in front of a group and letting their opinions be known. I couldn’t do that.

I was a deep thinker and intelligent, but I found it so hard to verbalise what I wanted to say in a way that made sense, or I’d miss the opportunity in the conversation because I was so stuck in my own head overthinking the opportunity passed me by.

I struggled to back myself, overthought everything, and agonised over making decisions. I was ambitious and goal orientated—I was great at what I did and wanted to succeed, but I didn’t believe in myself and would always compare myself to my more outgoing colleagues, thinking I wasn’t good enough.

I always thought being introverted was a negative thing that put me on the backfoot when it came to my career. But now I see it as one of my greatest strengths, because with some tweaking, I could be quietly powerful.

Everything starts in your own head.

After I embarked on my personal growth journey to learn more about myself, it quickly became obvious that my mindset and negative belief systems were holding me back from living my life to the fullest, reaching my potential in my career, and most importantly, being happy.

I thought the world was unfair, my managers were unfair, and I was the victim in the story who’d be dealt a crappy hand.

But once I realised the home truth that the biggest thing holding me back was actually MYSELF and my mindset, and I discovered that I could CHANGE that, I started learning and practicing techniques to rewire my thinking and get rid of belief systems that were limiting me. CBT, NLP, visualisation, self-coaching tools—you name it, I tried it. Want to know what happened? EVERYTHING CHANGED.

Sure, it took time, consistency and practice. But over a short amount of time considering the grand scheme of things (6 months of practice versus a lifetime of suffering), I managed to adopt a growth mindset, quieten the negative inner self talk, unlock my confidence, self-worth and self-image, sharpen my communication skills and become my own best cheerleader! Once I made those important internal changes, my external world started to follow suit.

After learning all this and making these incredible changes I couldn’t help but ask myself: Why the heck didn’t I learn these techniques sooner? Why aren’t they taught in schools, and why do so few people know that you can choose the thoughts and belief systems you want to entertain, develop any skill you want, and literally reprogram your own brain?

If they did, people would be kinder to each other, they would be kinder to themselves, they would experience more, achieve more, and live happier, more fulfilling lives full of potential and purpose, without feeling like they’re not good enough all the time.

These are questions I have yet to answer. But I’m on a mission to change that...

My mission

I envision a world where introverts are recognised and celebrated for their contributions, rather than being seen as shy, quiet or invisible.

A world where my fellow introverts have the confidence to speak up when it counts, be heard, and advocate for their worth, so they can achieve their career goals and do what they love—without feeling like they have to change into extroverts to get ahead.

My mission is to help as many people as possible to get in control of their mindset and go from feeling overlooked and anxious to being recognised, respected, and able to smash their career goals without burning out or changing who they are.

So, here we are. You’re here because you’ve probably realised that your lack of confidence and self-depracating nature is holding you back in your career and affecting your life, and it’s time to do something about it. And well done to you my friend, because that’s the first step!

You’re self-aware and know something needs to change, but you don’t have the tools just yet. Rest assured you’re in the right place, because that’s exactly what I’m here to help you with.

I’ve been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. I’m looking forward to helping you to tame the overthinking, self-doubt and fear of being seen, and unlock your true potential at work. You’re going to feel so free and empowered after you do!
